Okay, so many of you won't shut up with your Second amendment. You got me pissed off. I won't write on your Facebook walls or my friends' walls because it's useless. But I need to rant on my own blog. Even if it only makes me and just me better. Don't read it if it's gonna make you pissed. Go target practice in your backyard.
You think guns and mass shootings are not related. If you love guns so much that this bloodbath in Vegas is a regrettable collateral damage to you, so you can keep shooting your dear M-16 at beer bottles in the forest with your drunken friends, then answer this:
You guys really think walking around with a holster, constantly ready to shoot, is what's gonna make us safer? You really think a guy with a knife can kill 60 people and injure 500+ in 10 minutes? Or with a hammer or a baseball bat? How come there's so few mass shootings in Japan or Australia or England and more than one everyday in the US? Because the US is so exceptional you can't compare it to any other country?
If guns don't kill, what are they made for exactly? If weapons don't kill, let's have tanks, bazookas, nuclear weapons readily available. Let's see if a nuclear terrorist attack isn't worse than a knife attack.
How exactly are you imagining to use your beloved collection of assault rifles? Constantly on your shoulder, at the dinner table and in bed? Or perhaps in a locked closet, police station-style, and when the zombies attack the precinct, you open the cabinet and distribute guns to the whole family? Most of you have seen way too many movies.
"Bad guys will always find a way to have guns". So why have laws at all then? What the hell, why do I have to pay my taxes when bad guys don't?
"Why call the police because they have guns when you can have guns yourself?". No justice needed either, I suppose. Why have a judge and a jury spend time and money on a bad guy when you can just shoot him? Doesn't sound insane at all.
"If you don't like it, you should leave". Fuck you. First of all, maybe respect the first amendment as much as you love the Second and let me talk as I want. And second of all, because you own 20 American flags, a whole collection of guns and you roll on the ground in paramilitary clothes every weekend taking selfies with your latest machine gun doesn't mean you care for this country more than me. Guns don't make you braver than me, either. But they make you more dangerous--and that gives you a hard on.
"Guns exist to fight the government's tyranny". Like when did it happen, again? Did you march on Washington when it was revealed the Bush administration purposely lie to the people? When they imprisoned Japanese-Americans? When they slaughtered Native Americans? When they allowed to have people's careers destroyed because of their opinions? Methinks you were actually standing with them, helping them, asking for the authorization to shoot the fuckers.
And wait a second. The evil government, how are they going to come after the entire country? By sending the military? The military that is made of American people? Our children? Your own children?
"It's in the second amendment". Really? It says anyone can own assault rifles if they so want? And by the way... Who should be regulating the well-regulated militia?
So now... More importantly… How exactly do you suggest we improve the situation? What should we do to reduce those shootings? Arming teachers children and pets? That's when I ask this that you stay silent or answer "it's not the time to talk about this". But it's "the time" to talk about the second amendment.
Did you ever stop to think, for instance, that if guns are controlled, obtaining a gun will be difficult and risky if you have a history of illness or hate? It will be expensive. Terrorists and outlaws are arrested regularly because they need to take risks to obtain guns. You are so paranoid about black helicopters that you make the job of who you childishly call "bad guys" much easier.
We won't get rid of guns in America. America loves its guns too much. But maybe we can get rid of miltary grade weapons? Maybe we can consider that gun ownership is not like owning a toy? That it takes training, responsibility, mental stability? That people's ability to own a gun need to be assessed regularly?
Will gun control solve all the problems in the world? Of course not. Will it be the end of mass shootings? Or course not. But if we only get a mass shooting every other day instead of every day, that will be a good start, right?
I'll tell you what's happening in that world you want so bad, a world where anyone can freely buy a gun and bullets like you get a book on Amazon. People shoot at each other because of road rages, family or neighbor disputes. They see some shadow through the window, freak out and shoot and kill their own kid who had come home to surprise them ("he should have called first," you'll say). Suicide rates increase dramatically. And in a mass shooting like in poor Vegas, if everyone carries a gun like you so wish, it will be a crazy mess to know who's shooting at whom; some idiots will shoot at the wrong people--and in the end everyone will shoot at everyone.
